Honest answers to the questions travellers ask us most.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Can I get to Guatapé on my own, or do I need a tour?

You can. Buses to Guatapé leave from the Terminal del Norte in Medellín and take about two hours, longer on a weekend afternoon. A tour costs more but takes care of the transfer between village and rock, usually adds a boat ride and lunch, and gets you there and back without planning. The Piedra del Peñol is around 700 steps, which you climb either way.

Is Comuna 13 safe to visit?

It is one of the most visited places in Medellín and guided tours run there every day. It is also a residential neighbourhood, not a theme park: the safest way in is a guided tour with a guide from the area, and the least safe is wandering off the route with a phone in your hand. Check the current travel advice of your government before you go.

When is the best time to visit Medellín?

The city sits at roughly 1,500 metres, so it is mild all year, with daytime temperatures that hardly change. The rainier months are roughly April to May and October to November, while December to February and June to August are drier. Showers can come at any time, and open-air tours such as paragliding depend on the day’s wind and cloud.

How far is the airport from the city?

The international airport, José María Córdova, is in Rionegro, roughly 35 km from the city centre, and the drive takes about 45 to 60 minutes depending on traffic. Olaya Herrera airport lies inside the city and handles domestic flights. Allow for the transfer when you book an early tour on the day of arrival or departure.

Are Pablo Escobar tours appropriate?

It is a matter of taste, and it is argued about in Medellín itself, because the violence of the 1980s and 1990s is within living memory. The tours differ: some centre on the victims and on how the city changed, others are built on the legend. Read the description to see which kind you are booking, and treat promises of access to private or demolished places with caution.

How many days do I need in Medellín?

Three to five days cover the main bookable things: Comuna 13 and the city in half a day each, Guatapé in a full day, and one more of coffee, paragliding or food. Keep the long days apart so you do not book Guatapé and a coffee-town trip back to back, and leave an evening for El Poblado or Laureles.
